A Must See Art Show
September 12, 2009
Today was such a fun day in Old Town Sherwood! There was the Community Street Fair, Sherwood Saturday Market, a flea market (and donuts) at the Rebekah Hall, and the artist's reception for the 20/40 Challenge at the Odgepodge Gallery.
I want to disclose upfront that SFA Board Members Darla Boljat and Lori Randel (me) currently have 20 pieces of art each hanging at Odgepodge before I tell you what an AMAZING art show this is. I hope you stopped by today to see the creative mosaics created by the children of the SFA Visual Arts Camp this summer.
The 20/40 Challenge had 21 artists challenging themselves to create 20 new pieces of art in 40 days. All pieces were in an 8"x8" format and there are 389 individual pieces of unique art on the walls. Some are acrylic paintings, some are watercolor, there are some encaustic pieces, photography, mixed media and more! This show is a total feast for the eyes (and easy on the wallet).
Each artist did their pieces around a theme. Darla's paintings were of Sherwood's own wildlife refuge, curator Sandi Ballard painted dogs, Dave Gilmore digitally altered photos of local sites, my pieces were random thoughts. Three of the artists are SHS alums, and artists came from as far away as Sauvie Island to participate.
What I want you to know is that this show would be a success in any Portland gallery but we are lucky enough to have it in Sherwood and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to see it (and maybe buy some local art for your own walls). The 21 artists this year filled all the walls and left the gallery with a waiting list of artists who wanted to participate but couldn't. When you happen to run into a local city official - be sure to let them know that we need to get the Cultural Arts Center in the works ASAP!

To all who participated, volunteered and sponsored our recent production of The Music Man, we thank you! We have just started hearing back from those in attendance! Thank you all for the dedication and many hours you donated. Cast and Crew party will be held soon, and we will announce the next show at that time. Again, it was indeed a great pleasure to work with all of you! And to our wonderful sponsors, we could not have accoplished what we did without you. Thank you, thank you.

We need YOU!

Have you heard the buzz about Music Man being performed in the park this summer? Of course you have and you wish you could be part of it - well, you can! Volunteers with time and/or materials are needed to help in the preparations and during the performances. Please check out what's needed on the Volunteer/Sponsor tab.
If everyone does a little, a lot gets done.
Featured Artist - Darla Boljat
June 6, 2009
Cruise into the Odgepodge Gallery on Railroad Street on Saturday, June 13th to meet Darla Boljat, a board member of the SFA and the Featured Artist of the Month in the Gallery
Darla creates beautiful oil paintings featuring Oregon landscapes. She grew up in Tigard and currently calls Sherwood, OR home. Here she enjoys creating landscapes in her art studio. Darla says "I love Sherwood and all of Oregon’s beautiful landscapes. I think I could paint scenery here in Oregon for the rest of my life and still never finish painting all the wonderful sites Oregon has to offer."
You can preview some of her work at http://www.dkboljat.com/. The Gallery will be open during Cruisin Sherwood from 10am to 5pm. Hear from the artist how she creates her beautiful paintings, enjoy refreshments in the gallery and wine tasting in the garden. Remember to support our local art businesses. - Lori
SFA is now on Facebook
June 3, 2009
Please become a fan of SFA on Facebook and interact with us. This is an easy way to get updates on what's happening around Sherwood art-wise. There are discussion boards so we can be interactive and you can let us know how we're doing and where we should look for the future. We look forward to hearing from you -- and please tell your friends! ... Lori
First Music Man Auditions
June 2, 2009
Tonight was the first rehearsal for our upcoming musical, The Music Man, which will be performed in Stella Olsen Park on July 23, 24 and 25th.
Having not an ounce of musical ability, I was there to observe and cheer on the participants. I was blown away by how incredibly good they sounded while just doing the warm up exercises!! And then when they started to sing, it was as if they had been practicing for a month already.
Kudos to Patti Barrow, Scott Cherry, Cindy Christesen and Robyn Folsom for a magnificent start to the production! ….Lori
